Suran
Suran also known as yam is a tropical tuberous crop grown mainly in countries such as India, Africa and parts of Southeast Asia. The tuber comes from the Amorphophallus Campanulatus plant. The Suran is grown in India mainly as a cash crop and commonly used as a vegetable. The tuber does not look very attractive but, however, it has a whole host of health benefits.
How does Suran grow?
It is a perennial with a sturdy rhizome that can weigh up to 25KG. The leaves are oval and about 50cm long. The plant needs a lot of sun to grow well and only grows in countries with a (sub)tropical climate. The monoecious inflorescence is up to 35cm long and consists of male and female flowers. The rhizomes can be baked, boiled or fried as a starchy vegetable. The yam is native to India and Sri Lanka.
The taste
Yams have a flesh with crunch and a firm texture that tastes like sweet potatoes. It is described as having an earthy flavor that can often also be nutty with a hint of sweetness. Suran is often salted with lemon juice before it is used in cooking.
Where can you buy Suran?
Suran can be bought in the Netherlands mainly in the Surinamese, Asian and Turkish toko’s/supermarkets. Because the yam belongs to the vegetable category, you can often find it on the vegetable shelf of the relevant toko or supermarket.
Nutritional value
Yam is known for its medicinal powers. The tuber is rich in Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B1 and in addition the tuber contains a lot of minerals. Eating yam has a positive effect on digestion due to the drug Jimikand found in the tuber. Suran is good for the skin and works against skin problems such as pigmentation and sagging/rubbiness of the skin. In China, Korea and Japan, yam is used as a traditional medicine that helps fight coughs, ulcers, boils and other skin diseases.
