Tindoori
The Tindoori also called Ivy Gourd belongs to the family cucurbitaceae and is native to North and East Africa. The small cucumbers are green in color with overhanging stripes when young. They grow to be about 60 mm long with a diameter between 16-35 mm.
How does Tindoori grow?
The Ivy Gourd is a dioecious, climbing, herbaceous plant that grows about 3 meters tall. It grows best in a sheltered location and prefers sandy soil. The plant has a tuberous root system with green stems that are ribbed. The leaves are heart-shaped/f pentagonal and about 5-10cm long and wide. In this, only the undersides of the leaves are hairy. The flowers are large, star-shaped and white and are about 4cm in diameter. The flowers are blooming
The taste
The taste of tindoori is similar to the taste of cucumber but has a sweeter flavor.
Where can you buy tindoori?
Tindoori can be bought in the Netherlands mainly in Surinamese, Asian and Turkish tokos/supermarkets. Since tindoori belongs to the vegetable category, you can often find it on the vegetable shelf of the respective toko or supermarket.

Ivy Gourd is known for its medicinal values. In fact, the small cucumber is rich in beta-carotene. Beta-carotene aids in the optimal functioning of the heart and may help prevent heart disease. Tindoori also contains a lot of vitamins and minerals. For example, the fruit contains iron, calcium, Vitamin B1, B2 and various dietary fibers. Like the watermelon, most of this fruit consists of water.
