Okra Hindu
The Okra Hindu, also called the Abelmoschus esculentus belongs to the fruit vegetables and grows in countries with tropical or subtropical climates. Here you can think of countries such as Honduras, Mexico and Jordan. It is likely that the Okra plant originated in East Africa or Southwest Asia. Because of the striking shape of this particular plant, the Okra plant is also called the lady finger in England. The Okra plant has many different color varieties. For example, you can find the Okra Hindu in red, yellow and even purple. In addition to these different color varieties, the green variety is surely the most well-known color of the Okra plant.
What is Okra?
The okra plant (Abelmoschus) is an annual plant that can grow up to three to sometimes even four feet tall. The fruits of the okra plant are elongated, round to lacy box fruits and arise in the leaf axils of the plant. The length of the okra fruit varies between 5 and 25 centimeters. Because Okra are tropical plants, they need lots of light and, of course, lots of heat. When transplanting this plant, it is very important not to damage the roots. A fun fact about the plant is that unlike most fruits, okra points upward as it grows.
The taste
The taste of Okra depends on the method of preparation. In general, the taste of okra is spicy and similar to asparagus, zucchini or green beans. Okra is most delicious when combined with other produce in a dish and is not necessarily for eating alone. Because of this, okra can also be combined with a lot of different spices. Okra, for example, pairs well with tomato, onion, fish and meat and is often used in the kitchen as part of soups and sauces.
Where can you buy Okra?
Okra’s can be bought in the Netherlands mainly in the Surinamese, Chinese and Turkish toko’s/supermarkets. Because the Okra belongs to the fruit vegetable category, you can often find it on the vegetable shelf of the relevant toko or supermarket. Be careful which okra you buy, as there are two varieties. For example, the Okra Hindu is often available, as well as the Okra Clemson. You actually notice the difference between the two almost immediately because the Hindu variant is actually quite a bit slimmer than the Clemson variant.
