Methi Leaves
Methi leaves, also called Fenugreek leaves. They are eaten fresh as a vegetable and used dried as an herb. The Fenugreek plant is a plant in the buttercup family and is often called Greek hay. The plant originated in Mesopotamia and was very popular around the Mediterranean in ancient times.
What are the characteristics of the Fenugreek Plant?
It is an annual plant with a growth height between 35 and 50 centimeters. The colors of the plant’s flowers are white and the leaves are dark green and furry/striped. The leaves are very similar to clovers. The Fenugreek has 3 flowering months namely during the months: April, May and June. The plant is not hardy and needs normal soil to grow.
The Taste
Of the fenugreek plant, both the seeds and the leaves are used as kitchen herbs. The taste is spicy and a bit bitter and is often described as nutty. The leaves and kernels have an even spicier flavor dried that is similar to curry.

Methi Leaves can be bought in the Netherlands mainly in Surinamese, Asian and Turkish tokos/supermarkets. Since the leaves belong to the vegetable category, you can often find them on the vegetable shelf of the respective toko or supermarket.
