Atemoya
Atemoya are round and heart-shaped and grow to an average size of 8-12cm and can weigh up to 5 pounds. The skin of the fruit is green and turns yellower as the fruit matures. The fruit is very similar to a pine cone in appearance. The fruit is a cross between the sugar apple and cherimoya. The flesh has a snow-white color, inside the flesh are several large black seeds. It is important to note that these seeds should not be eaten. The taste is very similar to that of a Cherimoya.
Where does Atemoya grow?
The first Atemoya was bred in 1908 in Miami. Since then, the fruit has spread around the world, growing in New Zealand, South Africa and Egypt. The fruit is mainly grown in countries with a (sub)tropical climate. The Atemoya tree can grow up to 10 meters tall. The leaves of the tree are green and grow to be about 10 to 20cm long. The tree’s flowers are composed of green-colored, fleshy petals and inconspicuous sepals.
Where can you buy Atemoya?
Atemoya can be bought in the Netherlands mainly in the Surinamese, Chinese and Turkish toko’s/supermarkets. Because the fruit belongs to the category of fruit, you can often find it on the fruit shelf of the relevant toko or supermarket.
The taste
The taste of the fruit is sweet and sour and aromatic and very similar to the taste of Cherimoya. The fruit can be easily spooned out or incorporated into a salad or smoothie.

The Atemoya is known as a healthy piece of fruit. The fruit is rich in various vitamins and minerals. For example, the fruit contains Vitamins B1, B2 and B6. In doing so, the fruit is also rich in sodium, calcium, iron and fiber.
