Amla
Amla is also called Indian Gooseberry and is a berry that comes in three different color varieties namely yellow, red and green. In this, the green variant is the most well known. In English, Amla is called ´Gooseberry´. In India, the tree on which the Indian gooseberry grows is sacred. Where does Amla grow?
The Amla tree also called Malacca tree grows throughout India. The tree is medium-sized and can reach a height of about 1-8 meters. The branches are not finely hairy and grow between 10cm and 20cm long. The tree has simple green leaves that resemble pinnate leaves. The flowers are greenish-yellow in color. All parts of the tree are used in various types of herbal preparations, including the fruit, seed, leaves, root, bark and flowers.
The taste
The taste of Amla is sour, bitter, fibrous and astringent. They are also known for their sour taste. The gooseberries are almost savory with a sharpness reminiscent of lemons, while there is a subtle sweetness reminiscent of tropical fruits.
